Biography


Orazio Sciortino is a 25 years-old pianist and composer. He has been working for some years on music recostruction and composition in original style. After his work “Cadenzas for Mozart piano concertos”, published by Ricordi-Universal in 2007, he's now working on completion of some Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's unfinished fragments.

He is now studying composition at the “G.Verdi” Conservatory of Milan with Fabio Vacchi and some of his compositions have been played by several orchestras and during many festivals: Fondazione Cineteca Italiana (Ensemble of the “Verdi” Orchestra of Milan), Ascoli Piceno Festival, Camille Saint-Saens Chorus, Portogruaro International Festival (Orchestra of Accademia Naonis – conductor Claudio Desderi), Orchestra Cantelli in Teatro Dal Verme (Milan) Beethoven Festival in Bonn, Barge Music in New York, I Cameristi della Scala etc.

Recently, he has won the first prize at the 12th International Composition for Composers (Udine) with his composition for clarinet and piano “Deux Encores”.

As pianist, he has been leading an intense concert activity, solo and with orchestras, throughout Italy, playing for Amici della Musica (Siracusa), Notomusica Festival, Ferrara Musica, Società dei Concerti (Milan) – Sala Verdi of Milano Conservatory, Società Umanitaria (Milan), Amici della Musica (Ancona), Accademia Filarmonica (Bologna), Associazione Musicale Lucchese, Teatro Rossini (Pesaro), Teatro Due (Parma), Teatro Politeama (Palermo), Teatro Dal Verme (Milan) etc.. He has played with important orchestras such as the Chamber Orchestra of the “Moldova” State Philarmonic Orchestra of Iasi, Mihail Jora Philarmonic Orchestra, Emilia Romagna Symphony Orchestra “A.Toscanini”, Marche Chamber Orchestra, “Festival of Pergine Festival” Orchestra, Gyor Philarmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana etc..

He has also performed his concerts in Poland (F.Liszt Society, Wroclaw), Germany (Berlin Konzerthaus, Kitzingen International Festival “Seiler”, others festival in Braunschweig and Wolfsburg), Austria (Salzburg's Mozarteum), Kenya, Spain, Switzerland (Semaines musicales de Crans Montana, Montreux Jazz Festival), Malta, France and Canada (for two time he was guest of Orford Festival and Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, invited by Louis Lortie).

For AULIA label, he has recorded a cd which contains compositions for flute and piano by F.Schubert; also his recordings for RAI Tre, RadioTre and Radio Classica are worthy of notice.

He is now engaged in a research activity about “degenerate music” with the musicologist Gottfried Wagner.

He started his study in Syracuse (Sicily), in 2002 he passed the diploma exam at the “V.Bellini” Conservatory in Palermo with full marks and merit. He has then got the MA at the Milan Conservatory with full marks and honorable mention; he has graduated with highest honours from the International Piano Academy “Incontri col maestro”, Imola, where he has studied with Boris Petrushansky, Michel Dalberto and Louis Lortie.

He has further enhanced his education by attending several master classes organised by famous musical institutions, such as Salzburg's Mozarteum, Accademia di Imola, Accademia Chigiana of Siena; the latter has granted him a scholarship and an honour diploma.
